Why are you operating a `watch whisky mature` cam?

Camvista have been operating webcams throughout the UK, Ireland, and other countries around the world, since 1997. Many millions of Internet visitors have visited our many webcams in the last eleven years. On average, our webcam images are viewed by over 1 million visitors per month. As a Scottish company, based in the Kingdom of Fife, we have always wanted to operate a streaming webcam inside a Scottish whisky distillery. The Scotch whisky industry, is a major earner for the economy in Scotland, as well as being a worldwide brand for Scotland. Our novel `watch whisky mature` webcam is expected to be viewed by at least 1 million visitors per year. After 10 years, viewing the Bruichladdich single malt whisky maturing, we estimate that over 10 million Internet visitors will have viewed our X4 quadrupled cask of whisky - making the whisky cam cask, the most popular and famous whisky cask in the world.

Why did you choose the Bruichladdich Distillery to host the `watch whisky mature` webcam?

Since the year 2000, we have been trying to find a whisky distillery to host our `watch whisky mature` webcam. We have spoken to a number of whisky distillery’s over the years to allow us to install and operate a webcam system inside a whisky bonding warehouse, overlooking a whisky cask – but no avail. In the summer of 2007, good friends of the team at Camvista, the Stewart family from Kirkcaldy, recommended that we make an approach to the Bruichladdich distillery in the Isle of Islay. Close family members of the Stewart’s live on Islay and bought a whisky cask, as a christening present, for Rachel Stewart, their youngest daughter, at the Bruichladdich distillery. Their whisky cask is expected to be bottled when Rachel Stewart is 18 years old. A great 18 th birthday gift for her special birthday. After a meeting with members of the management team at Bruichladdich distillery, on the Isle of Islay, in August 2007, we were given permission to go ahead with the `watch whisky mature` webcam. Bruichladdich are well known in the whisky industry for their innovative and marketing initiatives. The Islay distillery have already operated a number of Whisky Distillery webcams at Bruichladdich which attract many online visitors to their very popular website

Why do visitors wishing to smell the aroma of whisky online need to be 18 years old in the UK, Europe and other “non-North American” countries?

We are not trying to encourage online visitors, under the age of 18 years old, to drink whisky, or attempt to smell whisky online. We hope youngsters will be patient, and take the opportunity to wait till they become at least 18 years old. The watch whisky mature cam will be online for 10 years. Plenty time for youngsters to wait till they become the legal age to drink alcohol. We’re not rushing the maturing age of this whisky cask, so hopefully visitors will not rush the urge to smell the whisky online till they’ve reached the legal age to drink alcohol.

Why do North America visitors have to be 35 years old to smell the aroma of whisky, online?

For our North America visitors, we have been advised by our Legal advisors in Scotland to set the age limit to 35 years for our American visitors. Unfortunately this is due to the potential litigation issues that could be caused should an American visitor fall of their computer seat, or suffer from a hangover, due to the aroma from the world’s strongest whisky, aptly named the `perilous` whisky and decide to sue our small Scottish company. We genuinely don’t wish to offend any of our North American visitors, but with over one million lawyers in America actively looking to sue, anything that moves, including our static whisky cask, we’ve decided to carry out and write up a full risk assessment to make sure that we don’t have to switch off our `watch whisky mature` cam, before the year of 2018.
